Nvidia Just Had Its Best Quarter Ever. It’s Now Worth More Than Every Country Except Two

Date:

Last night Nvidia reported the most impressive quarter in its history. This morning it’s worth $5.7 trillion. Only the United States and China produce more in a single year than Nvidia is now valued at.

Let that sit for a second. A chip company that spent most of its life making graphics cards for gamers is now larger than the entire economies of Germany, Japan, India, and the UK combined.

Here are the numbers from last night first. Then we’ll explain how we got here.

What Nvidia Just Reported

Revenue came in at $81.6 billion for the quarter. Wall Street expected $78.8 billion. The whisper number was $80 billion. Nvidia cleared both.

Earnings per share hit $1.87, beating the consensus of $1.70. Data centre revenue surged 92% year on year to $75 billion. Q2 guidance came in at $91 billion, well above the $87 billion analysts expected.

Every single number beat. By a significant margin.

Then came the bombshell nobody saw coming.

Nvidia raised its quarterly dividend from $0.01 per share to $0.25 per share — a 25-fold increase. The board authorised a fresh $80 billion in share buybacks. Total capital returned to shareholders in Q1 alone was a record $20 billion.

For four years Nvidia has been a pure growth company, reinvesting everything back into the business. Companies in that phase don’t raise dividends 25 times. They don’t authorise $80 billion buyback programmes. This is Nvidia’s leadership telling the market something important: we are so confident in our future cash generation that we can return tens of billions to shareholders and still invest everything we need to stay ahead.

What Jensen Huang Actually Said

“This was an extraordinary quarter. Demand has gone parabolic,” Huang said as he closed the earnings call. “The reason is simple: Agentic AI has arrived.”

Agentic AI is the next phase of the technology — AI that doesn’t just answer questions but takes actions, makes decisions, and operates autonomously. If Huang is right that it has arrived, the demand for Nvidia chips doesn’t slow down. It accelerates.

Huang also confirmed that Nvidia is the only platform that runs every frontier AI model — naming Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI, Meta and Google’s Gemini specifically. Every major AI product on earth runs on Nvidia hardware.

Now Here’s the Number That Puts It All in Perspective

Only the United States and China produce more in a year than Nvidia is now valued at, based on 2026 nominal GDP projections from the IMF. Germany, Japan, India, and the UK all sit below the $5.7 trillion line. NBC News

Nvidia’s market cap surpassing Germany means the company is now larger than every European economy, including the UK at $4.26 trillion, France at $3.6 trillion, Italy at $2.74 trillion, and Spain at $2.09 trillion. Yahoo Finance

The combined market capitalisation of the five largest US companies — Nvidia, Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon — totals $20.81 trillion. That sum exceeds the combined GDP of Europe’s five largest economies, which stands at $18.14 trillion. Bloomberg

Nvidia is now the largest company in the S&P 500 with a 7% index weight — larger than entire sectors like energy or utilities. The Times of Israel

To put that in the most human terms possible. If Nvidia were a country it would be the third largest economy on earth. Bigger than Japan. Bigger than Germany. Bigger than every country in Europe put together.

How Did We Get Here

Nvidia spent most of its existence making graphics cards for video game players. That was the business. Then something happened.

The AI revolution needed enormous computing power to train and run its models. The chips that turned out to be best suited for that job were the same chips Nvidia had been building for gaming. The company didn’t pivot to AI. AI came to them.

Modern AI models are unbelievably hungry for computing power. Nvidia’s graphics processing units have become the default chips that train and run those models, whether they belong to OpenAI, Anthropic, or the big cloud platforms. NBC News

Every hyperscaler — Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta — is spending hundreds of billions on AI infrastructure this year. Almost all of that spending flows through Nvidia. The company is the toll road that every AI vehicle has to drive on.

The One Risk That Won’t Go Away

Many of Nvidia’s biggest customers — from hyperscalers to cloud providers — are actively designing their own AI chips, often with R&D budgets larger than Nvidia’s entire cost base. New competition from ASIC makers and rival GPU vendors, plus trade war tariffs and export controls, could compress those high margins that the current valuation assumes will persist. Yahoo Finance

China is still locked out of Nvidia’s most advanced chips. That’s a significant market that isn’t generating revenue. Trump’s Beijing meetings last week raised hopes about export control relaxation but nothing concrete has been announced.

And the stock’s reaction to last night’s record quarter tells you something. Despite beating every metric by a significant margin, the stock barely moved after hours. When perfection is already priced in, even perfection doesn’t surprise.

The Bottom Line

Nvidia just had the best quarter in its history. $81.6 billion in revenue. $91 billion guided for next quarter. A 25-fold dividend increase. $80 billion in buybacks. Demand described as parabolic.

And the company is now worth more than every country on earth except the United States and China.

The AI boom isn’t a bubble. It’s a business. And right now Nvidia is the most valuable business in the history of human commerce.
